News from the Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy

Greetings from the Director

I have always been amazed at how quickly academic semesters fly by. The fall 2023 semester has been no exception. It seems like we just started, and we now have a Christmas tree in the accounting suite and are planning graduation events. However, as you read the Bulldog Ledger, I think you will find that there have been significant accomplishments in the School of Accountancy during a semester that is almost in the history books.

This semester we welcomed Dr. Scott Grawe as the new Dean of the College of Business. Scott comes from Iowa State University, where he served as Chair of the Department of Supply Chain Management and Associate Dean for Strategy and Engagement. Based on my interactions with Scott and the initiatives he has already implemented, I am confident that he will provide the leadership necessary for the College of Business to grow and meet the needs of all stakeholders. More information about Scott is provided in this newsletter.

There are several highlights of the fall semester that are worthy of mentioning. First, faculty have completed a review of the curriculum to ensure that the content on the new CPA exam is sufficiently covered. This has resulted in several changes to the curriculum including the addition of an IT Audit and Analytics course. Second, the online enrollment in the MPA and MTax programs reached a record level. Third, placement of students continues to be near 100 percent. Students have multiple offers from firms and industry in Mississippi and beyond. Lastly, there was a record attendance of employers and students at the fall Accounting Career Fair. These highlights, along with other stories in the newsletter, provide a clear indication that the School of Accountancy is adhering to the new University tagline, “Taking Care of What Matters.”

It would be remiss of me to not mention three of the School’s Advisory Council members who are going above and beyond for the accounting profession. Jerry Goolsby was elected as the Chairman of the Mississippi Society of CPAs; Jan Lewis was elected to the AICPA Board of Directors and Gary Walker was appointed by Governor Tate Reeves to the Mississippi State Board of Public Accountancy. We are very proud of these School of Accountancy alumni serving in high-level positions.

I hope you enjoy reading the Bulldog Ledger. I encourage you to keep up to date with what is going on in the School through our social media platforms. Thank you for your continued support of the Adkerson School of Accountancy.
